چکیده

The prospective clinical examination of 80 patients with the verified carcinoma of the colon and rectum was performed at the Clinic of General and Vascular Surgery of the M.M.A. in the period 1989-1990 with the aim to evaluate efficacy and justified use of antibiotic prophylaxis or prophylaxis and antibiotic therapy after elective surgical intervention. The preoperative mechanical preparation was performed in all patients. The combined metranidazole-gentamycin therapy was applied. In the group of patients receiving antibiotic therapy only, as a short prophylaxis, the postoperative infective complications were recorded in 5% of cases. In the second group of patients receiving antibiotic prophylaxis and therapy these complications were recorded in 10% of cases. The average duration of postoperative hospitalization was 13/14 days in both groups of patients. The use of antibiotic prophylaxis in elective colorectal surgery in patients with carcinoma of the colon and rectum is justified but it is not a substitution for nonadequate surgical intervention.

Prevention of severe infectious complications after colorectal surgery using preoperative orally administered antibiotic prophylaxis (PreCaution): study protocol for a randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND Colorectal surgery is frequently complicated by surgical site infections (SSIs). The most important consequences of SSIs are prolonged hospitalization, an increased risk of surgical reintervention and an increase in mortality. Perioperative intravenously administered antibiotic prophylaxis is the standard of care to reduce the risk of SSIs. In the last few decades, preoperative orall...

Cefotetan versus Conventional Triple Antibiotic Prophylaxis in Elective Colorectal Cancer Surgery

This study examined infectious outcomes in elective colorectal cancer surgery between cefotetan alone or conventional triple antibiotics. From January to December 2007, 461 consecutive primary colorectal cancer patients underwent elective surgery. Group A contained 225 patients who received conventional triple antibiotics (cephalosporin, aminoglycoside and metronidazole) for prophylaxis, and gr...

Antibiotic regimen and the timing of prophylaxis are important for reducing surgical site infection after elective abdominal colorectal surgery.

BACKGROUND Surgical site infections (SSIs) cause morbidity after elective colorectal surgery, and antibiotic prophylaxis can decrease SSIs. The aim of this study was to determine compliance with an antibiotic administration protocol, including regimen, initial dose timing, and re-dosing, and determine the risk of SSI associated with each. We hypothesized that appropriate antibiotic administrati...

Prophylaxis in elective colorectal surgery: the cost of ignoring the evidence.

INTRODUCTION Three strategies are used to prevent complications in colorectal surgery: heparin and antibiotics given perioperatively and abdominal drains placed intraoperatively. To investigate the appropriate and inappropriate use of these prophylactic techniques and to assess the costs associated with their inappropriate use, we studied patients who underwent elective colorectal procedures. ...
